On 6 October,
BUTTERFLIES Project
took part in the 3rd Biointelligence Congress in
Stuttgart, Germany, bringing our approach to
sustainable additive manufacturing to the conversation.
The congress brought together researchers, industry professionals and innovators to explore how
biology, technology and computer science can work together in manufacturing.
Our poster, “Hybrid Manufacturing for Bio-Intelligent
Futures”,
focused on a practical challenge: how can we make chitin and chitosan
viable materials for industrial 3D printing?
These renewable biopolymers offer considerable potential, but challenges in
printability, equipment compatibility and production speed still limit their
adoption. Our poster outlined how
BUTTERFLIES Project
is addressing these barriers through:
• Binder Jetting with chitin nanocrystal-based
binders,
targeting customised biomedical and functional components.
• Two-Photon Polymerisation with photocurable
chitosan-based materials,
targeting high-resolution organoid scaffolds and advanced cell-culture platforms.
• An AI-enabled Digital Biosphere Platform to support
process optimisation and quality control.
Together, these developments aim to connect biomaterial research with
manufacturing processes that can meet practical needs in industry and
healthcare.
We thank all the organisers and participants of the 3rd Biointelligence
Congress
for bringing together expertise and perspectives from across the biointelligence community,
and for the opportunity to share the
BUTTERFLIES Project
approach.
